If you can wade through Alex Kilgour's brogue, and manage not to be distracted by lovely pirate women who would as soon kill you as kiss you, then this is a fun book!
Sten and company are back and true to form seems like just yesterday I was reading the paperbacks , just don't ask Alex about the spotted snake !
It's been too long but worth the wait. Sten and gang (and the Eternal Emperor) are back in a story that fits right into the future. I can't wait for the next installment.
Thought I would never read a Sten book again! For those who have never read the Sten series, it is the most solid space opera ever written. It follows Stem from a teen to the most solid and hard added fighter in space. Each of the 8 books are some of the most well written, well edited books I have ever read. IN ANY GENRE. Read them all. NOW!
I would guess that I could be referred to as a fanboy of this series and author. It is so much fun that he has started writing in this series again after so many years and possibly the best part is he is not done and has more books planned. If you enjoyed the original series that Allan Cole wrote with Chris Bunch, you need to pick a copy and start reading and if my opinion means anything, you will not be disappointed.

I have read and reread the entire Sten series by Allan, with Chris Bunch, and deem it the best of military SF and space opera. This new Sten adventure is very welcome.
Here we have more tales of Sten, the Eternal Emperor's wet work agent, troubleshooter (and whipping boy should things go wrong).
I liked this book greatly, although it suffered a small bit for being shorter that the original epics, yet still having to have some explanation of the principal characters. A half star off, for Allan Cole, is still five star space opera, and I look forward to the advertised sequel.
I've been a fan of Allan's and Chris' Sten series since I first read them back int he late 80s. Since then I have read and reread the original series numerous times. The first book, "Sten," is easily one of the preeminent tales in the military sci-fi/space opera category. Such fun and adventure. I both write and read for a singular reason escapism. This series has always served that purpose to the nth degree.
This latest excursion into the world of Sten and his cohorts takes place as the Tahn are coming to the forefront and that plot point serves as both a background and a turning point in Sten's adventures. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed dropping back in with the gang and seeing them do what they do best cause and overcome chaos.
It was a new, exhilarating ride that I'm sure to re-read time and again, whenever I need a brief taste of sci-fi adventure.
Worthy of a read for anyone who loves sci-fi, military thrillers and /or space opera adventures!
After a 20 year hiatus, Sten is BACK! Allan Cole has written many books over the years, but the Sten series has always been cherished. When he and his writing partner Chris Bunch closed out the series after a million-plus words I will freely admit to feeling like I'd lost a family member. Even re-reading the novels (and I've physically worn out a set because I re-read them often; they're old friends) doesn't quite eliminate that "dang, it's over" feeling.
But... now Allan has returned to the world of the Eternal Emperor with a new story from Sten's days in command of a Mantis unit. Our old friends are back - General Mahoney, The Eternal Emperor, Ida, Doc, and Alex Kilgour. And they're in fine form. (Though, of course, Alex does have a new shaggy dog story to tell... clottin universe, even that's a welcome return.) And they're dealing with the fallout from the Imperium X discovery that was central to the Wolf Worlds. Complete with a beautiful pirate queen, an old enemy or two, a bit of swash, a dash of buckle, and... well. You get the picture.
If you read the series, you need to read this new story. If you didn't (which part of the universe do you live in?!?), you need to read this story. And then the rest of the series.
And best of all? The little umbrella in the stregg? It's clear that this is just the start of more adventures! So why are you reading this? You can read the story instead! Go on!
